Millennium Basildon 2010 – Friday

Today was a day of mixed feelings. We got to the site a bit before midday, and the place was hot already with quite a bit of moisture in the air, sucking a lot of energy off the players. We had no bigger issues as we had a proper pile of water, fruits and sports drinks to keep us going for the couple of games we had scheduled.

Our first game was against Spartans Athens, who I don’t recall us meeting earlier, and we started out somewhat cautiously but won the first point after controlled and tight play. The Spartans were great shooters and had our moves pinned down for the second point, and they tied the game by advancing at the right times while we were stuck. The third point was a true chessmatch with both teams holding down lanes and trying to figure out a weakness to utilize. We had a 3-2 lead in bodies for a long time, but our center fielder Nysty was having a bit of issues with his equipment and could not move to support a snake push. Eventually, the Spartans’ snake corner got eliminated and Pamppu could push through to the small dorito and take out the last opponent by having a clear shot to his back across the field. We hung the flag with a half a minute left on the clock, and held off the Spartans for a 2-1 victory. We were a bit worried of our play lacking aggression, and decided to ramp it up for the next game.

Everything seemed to go through nicely in the first point wit our M-side running down the last guy left for 7eme Compagnie Nancy, who had previously won Amsterdam Sabotage 4-1. A one-point lead quickly turned around to a 1-2 situation by us still missing the necessary aggression and also giving out additional handicap by giving out bounces.. The Nancy guys played a very good point running our remaing two guys down through the middle after a drawn-out 2 on 2 stalemate. At 1-3 and under 30 seconds on the clock we decided to find our aggression and will and go all-out for the last point, to at least sweeten up our ED points, even though we were too far back to win. We exploded through the 7eme Compagnie, and just missed the buzzer by under one second! so, a 1-3 loss on the board.

We are playing the great guys from Amsterdam tomorrow, and as we are both at 1 points with us leading by 1 ED in 2nd position in our group and Sabotage 2 in 3rd seat, both teams are looking at a forced victory. There’s going to be a hell of a match tomorrow!
